🔄 How to Erase Your Mac Without Removing macOS

Whether you’re planning to trade in, give away, or redeploy your Mac, it’s important to securely erase your data—without deleting the operating system. Many clients ask us how to do this safely, especially when preparing to sell or gift their Mac. Here’s a step-by-step guide using Erase Assistant, the easiest and most secure method available on modern Macs.

When Can You Use Erase Assistant?

The Erase All Content and Settings feature works only on:

  • Macs with Apple silicon

  • Intel-based Macs with the T2 Security Chip

It removes your personal data, settings, and apps while keeping macOS intact—perfect for passing your Mac to someone else.

🛠️ Steps to Erase Your Mac with Erase Assistant

  1. Open System Settings.

  2. Click General > Transfer or Reset from the sidebar.

  3. Select Erase All Content and Settings.

  4. When prompted, enter your Mac login password and click Unlock.

  5. Click Continue to proceed.

  6. If you’re signed in to iCloud, you may be prompted to turn off Find My Mac and enter your Apple ID password.

  7. Click Erase All Content & Settings.

    • Your Mac will restart and display a blank screen or progress bar.

  8. Select a Wi-Fi network or connect a network cable when prompted.

    • Your Mac will activate and restart again.

  9. After restart, you’ll see the Setup Assistant.

    • If you’re giving the Mac away, don’t set it up. Instead, press and hold the power button until it powers off.

That’s it! Your Mac is now wiped and ready for its next user—no reinstallation of macOS required.
